There’s no denying that Square Enix’s original I.P. that launched on the Nintendo Switch this past year was nothing short of beautiful. The graphical art style of Octopath Traveler pushed the power of the Switch in a different direction that other developers haven’t yet attempted on Nintendo’s platform.
Square Enix has coined this particular art style as being “HD2D,” which features flat pixelated characters with high definition environments surrounded them, giving the game that retro feel but with modern touches. And according to WIPO (World International Property Organization), Square Enix has gone so far as to trademark this specific art style.

Now, this doesn’t technically mean that Square Enix is planning on creating a sequel to Octopath Traveler or even a new game using that art style, but with the success that the JRPG has seen on the Switch, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an Octopath Traveler 2 come out of the woodworks.
