Yes, is the simple answer. Days Gone is a quintessential open world game, a sandbox full of side quests, collectibles, and everything else you’d expect from a game based on the popular design.
Once you finish the game’s opening tutorial missions, you pretty much have the freedom to explore the map as you wish. That is if you have the fuel to travel! Days Gone’s traversal revolves heavily around the motorbike, as it’s far too dangerous –and slow– to run about on foot.
You will need fuel stops handy if you are plotting a big expedition on the bike around the map. But ultimately, you do have plenty of freedom. There aren’t many areas that are locked away until later in the game — the sandbox is very open from the start.
As you bike around the map you will occasionally get radio calls for more missions to do, and there are plenty of camps to clear out, and points of interest to keep you busy.
As for fast travel, there are NERO checkpoints to clear out, which unlock fast travel points and give you a choice of upgrading your health, stamina, or Focus.
