If you’re too far from him, he’ll summon two magic spears and launch them at you, and these can hit you even if you’re standing behind pillars. These aren’t pieces of armor that you equip to get some special perks. Instead, the Relics you find while playing Destiny 2 are used to unlock the different subclasses.
